Myopia, or short-sightedness as it’s commonly known, is rapidly increasing in prevalence among our children, occurring more often and at ever younger ages. Myopia can progress rapidly during childhood, leading to poor eyesight requiring strong glasses or contact lenses, and in later life can also increase the risk of several eye diseases and permanent vision loss.
Traditionally myopic progression has been accepted as inevitable, treated with ever stronger glasses or lenses. More recently research has shown that this progression can be slowed dramatically with several different types of treatments, including custom glasses, myopia-control contact lenses, atropine eye drops, lifestyle changes, and a combination of these.
Dyson & Long optometrists are able to assess your child’s risk of myopic progression, and advise the most appropriate treatment options to control this condition. Ask your optometrist if you have any concerns or questions.
