OUR SERVICES
Children’s Vision and Eyecare
Children pose a unique set of challenges when it comes to eyecare and vision assessment. Development of clear, healthy vision is crucial in a child’s early years meaning the detection and management of potential problems is paramount. All our optometrists at Dyson & Long are trained in the detection and management of children’s vision and eye health conditions.
Optometrist Dr Philipa Munday is a practicing member of the Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrists, who specialise in treating many of the abnormalities in vision development encountered in children.
Treatment for focussing disorders, amblyopia (‘lazy eye’), eye turns, eye co-ordination deficits and reading vision problems, plus childhood myopia are all managed in our clinic. Dyson & Long offer a free vision screening service to local kindergartens, to ensure vision problems are detected at an early age before critical schooling commences.
Our practice always carries a large range of sturdy but stylish children’s spectacle frames and sunglasses, to help ensure their eyes receive the care they need. Lifetime warranties are even available on some frames, so broken frames need never be a concern.
Contact Lens Fitting
With a combined 100-plus years of contact lens fitting experience, the optometrists at Dyson & Long can help you discover the freedom of successful contact lens wear.
We fit a vast range of different lenses to suit your requirements and can tailor a contact lens wear package to ensure your vision and lifestyle expectations are met.
Diabetic Eye Disease
Whilst all eye conditions are routinely checked as part of a comprehensive eye examination, some conditions demand more specific testing and investigations.
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness and vision loss in Australia. With rising cases of Diabetes, regular and thorough eye examinations are required to check for early signs of diabetic eye disease. A diabetic eye examination will typically involve dilation of the pupils with eye drops, as well as a wide view retina scan, which enables our optometrist to carefully examine the retina for early signs of diabetic retinopathy.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is prevalent eye disease in Australia’s ageing population, notable for being difficult to detect early. Our optometrists assess all patients for signs of glaucoma and will often suggest more specialised screening for those at high risk, such as those with a family history. At Dyson & Long, patients can be screened by the most up-to-date equipment available, allowing us to detect the disease far sooner than was previously possible. DNA testing for glaucoma is now also available. All optometrists at Dyson & Long are therapeutically endorsed, allowing them to prescribe glaucoma medications when necessary.
Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of serious vision loss in older Australians and has received a lot of attention in recent years due to breakthroughs in treatments. At Dyson & Long, our optometrists use Ocular Coherence Tomography to obtain a 3D image of the retinal structures, allowing for more accurate and timely diagnosis of the condition. This technology allows earlier detection of changes in the Macula and aids in determining the most effective treatment options for the condition.
Ocular Medicine Prescriptions
All optometrists in our clinics are therapeutically trained and endorsed to prescribe ocular medicines, meaning there is no need to visit a general medical practitioner when an eye condition requires medical treatment. Dyson & Long’s PBS registration also ensures eligible patients receive their medicines at subsidised rates via their regular pharmacy.
Prescription of ocular medicines may only occur after a thorough eye examination by one of our optometrists. Emergency appointments are generally available same day where applicable.
Laser & Cataract
Co-management
For patients who are interested in laser vision correction, Dyson & Long can provide a complete pre-operative assessment to determine their suitability for laser and advise the most appropriate procedure. In addition, we offer on-site post-operative care and follow-ups, minimising the need for multiple visits to city specialists after treatment.
We are routinely involved in diagnosis and assessment of cataracts, referring for surgical treatment as well as offering full post-operative care services in our rooms. Dyson & Long have no financial affiliations to any laser clinics or cataract surgeons, ensuring patients are only referred to specialists who can offer the most appropriate patient care. We are also a registered co-management clinic for the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
Myopia Control
Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, is rapidly increasing in prevalence among children. Myopia can progress rapidly during childhood, leading to poor eyesight requiring strong glasses or contact lenses. It can also increase the risk of several eye diseases and permanent vision loss later in life.
Traditionally, myopic progression has been accepted as inevitable, treated with ever-stronger glasses or lenses. More recent research has shown that this progression can be slowed dramatically with several different types of treatments, including custom glasses, myopia-control contact lenses, atropine eye drops and lifestyle changes.
Dyson & Long optometrists assess your child’s risk of myopic progression and advise the most appropriate treatment options to control this condition.
